Germicidal lamps use an electric light to produce an ultraviolet C (UVC) light. This type of light is short-waved and uses the ultraviolet to disrupt DNA base pairing, which causes the formation of pyrimidine dinners. This formation leads to the inactivation of bacteria, protozoa and viruses. Additionally, it can be used to produce ozone for water disinfection. Commonly, germicidal lamps are used to sterilize workspaces and tool. Alternatively, they can be used by geologists to provoke fluorescence in mineral samples.
